Sociology and the Real World

In these first two chapters we’ve read we get a quick course one sociology and what it is. Within the lecture in-class, we also covered a lot. This included many different topics with just what is sociology, why it is important, and a few different sociological concepts. In the in-class lecture, we did learn that sociology is “the study of social problems”. This was a big part of the lecture that did lead into all of the other things that we learned. Like a few simple sociological concepts such as The Beginner’s Mind, Culture Shock, and Sociological Imagination. First The Beginner’s Mind is a mind that is open and doesn’t really know a whole lot. This mind is seen as bias-free and open. This is the opposite of The Expert’s mind. This mind is full of bias and really isn’t super open. The next concept was the concept of Culture Shock this is where when you go somewhere with a different culture or way of life. The final concept that we were looking into was the concept of the Sociological Imagination. This concept was the idea of being or having the awareness of the relationship between personal and the society. This all as a whole was a big part and idea of the lecture.

In this lecture with all that, we talked about one of the big things that stood out to me was the idea of Culture Shock. This is something that I and it seemed many other people within the class did connect with and understand on a deeper level. I’ve experienced this in my life on multiple occasions. Just last month I went with my family down to Texas because my Uncle moved down there for a job. When we were down there the people were much more open and very open to talking to everyone. Whereas in Ellensburg I really don’t talk to people as openly and they don’t approach you as much. If I am being 100% honest I have not really met any of my neighbors in my dorm room hall. The idea of Culture Shock was also seen a lot more when I went to Mexico for my senior trip. When we were there it was so weird to see the difference with the foods. At the resort that we were at we had some simple pancakes which doesn’t seem like something that was that weird but, when eating them it had such a different taste it was just crazy to me. Throughout the trip, this was a reoccurring thing. This idea of Culture Shock was something to me that I just understand and have experienced on a personal level so much.
